Carolyn + Jonathan Intimate Outdoor Wedding at Chester Meeting House in Connecticut
When a couple from Brooklyn NYC called and asked if I would come to Connecticut to photograph their intimate, artistic wedding at the Chester Meeting House in Chester, Connecticut, I was immediately excited and said abso-freaking-lutely!!!
I always knew it was going to be amazing, but I never dreamed how special it would be, particularly to me as an artist. Working with both digital + 35mm film (which I’ve really missed), without any video aspects like our timelapse, really forced me to shift my approach to the day and step back, slow down, and really take it all in.
But I’m getting ahead of myself, so let’s back up a bit.
As Carolyn + Jonathan’s wedding day approached, I began imagining what my surroundings would look like.
I pictured a quaint little town, probably a backdrop like what you’d see in urban NY, but beyond that I tried not to have too many ideas or expectations. Anytime I’m working in a new city or even a new venue, I love to visit the area before the event so I can really get a sense of it for myself.
What I saw as I drove into Chester, CT was like nothing I have ever seen before. A gorgeous, colorful little (tiny) town, fog rolling over the picturesque mountain backdrop, rainbow flags and signs proclaiming to welcome all - it was literally something out of a storybook or a lifetime movie (the sweet ones, not the ones where someone is about to kidnap her neighbor’s baby).
It honestly made me question all my future plans and consider whether I should just up and move there immediately - family and pets dragging behind me.
Spoiler alert: I didn’t.
But I DO absolutely want to go back and photograph weddings there.
Chester, Connecticut, and really all of rural CT, is breathtaking but in the most humble and inviting way - and Carolyn + Jonathan perfectly match that vibe.
Their wedding was filled to the brim with love, laughter, and tears, the cutest little details, the BEST ice cream from Honeycone Craft Ice Cream (fig honey + salted dark chocolate YUM), the most wonderful guests, family, and vendors…and just soooo much freaking joy.
Documenting all of that - capturing the feelings, the sounds, the tastes - and doing so on both digital + 35mm film, was beyond words.
So instead of trying to describe it and falling dreadfully short, let me just show you.
